![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If Arial is a typeface than Arial Bold is a font. Some popular typefaces are Arial, Georgia, and Helvetica.įonts, on the other hand, are a part of the typeface, it's a specific style. A typeface is a group of characters that have the same design. TypefaceĪ typeface is a term that is commonly used interchangeably with font, but that's not correct. It refers to anything from the size of the letters, to the way letters are displayed on a page. We've touched on this already, but by definition, typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language readable and visually appealing. In order for us to be on the same page, here is a handy list of terms that are important to know when thinking of the typography of a website. Typography terminologyīefore going deep into the world of typography, it is important to know its language. By using different fonts, we're in control of what we want the visitors to see, what is most important. The main thing it shows is that it's important to use some sort of hierarchy. There's some research done, showing the patterns in which we view website most commonly. With the number of websites we visit, it's clear that we don't read them all word by word. Let's take a closer look at some important aspects that typography can influence. ![]() ![]() When the non-serving partner wants to suggest a location for the server, he or she will wiggle or flash a signal on the side of the court to which they would like their teammate to serve. Information about the serve can also be communicated via hand signals. ![]() The best teams are constantly in communication about every decision. But beach volleyball veterans know better. To the unsuspecting observer, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of communication between partners before and during the serve. Open hand: The blocker plans to match up with the hitter, deciding where to block based on the opposing team’s set and the hitter’s approach and arm swing. Two fingers: The blocker plans to block an opponent’s “angle” attack. One finger: The blocker plans to block the opponent’s line attack.Closed fist: No block should be attempted for the opponent on that side of the court. ![]() Here are the most common blocking signals: For example, if a player signals two fingers on the right side of her body, that means she plans to block “angle” on the right side of the court. Each hand refers to the type of block that the players will set on the corresponding side of the court. The signals are generally made behind the back to hide them from the opponent and are given with both hands by the serving player’s partner prior to the serve. Since it’s not strategically sound to yell out where you plan to block, this information is often conveyed through hand signals. This information will make it much easier for your partner to play defense. In beach volleyball, it’s important to let your teammate know where you plan to block. Outlined below are a few of the most common hand signals used on the sand court and their corresponding meanings. In those cases, it’s best to use hand signals. ![]() For example, it probably isn’t in your team’s best interest to scream out where you plan to serve the ball, but that’s definitely information your partner would find useful. There are, however, a few instances when you may need the exchanges between you and your partner to be more discreet. Because there are only two players to cover the court, there is nothing more important to team success in beach volleyball than communication. If you’re looking to spend a peaceful and quiet day at the beach then you should probably steer clear of the sand courts. ![]() ![]() ![]() I make sure there is one including with each activity in my sets. But also, I always feel like it’s so beneficial to have a visual ‘I Can’ card included in each drawer to my students a little picture cue to remind them of what the station work should look like. MAKING MORNINGS INDEPENDENTīy keeping activities and materials familiar, your students will become accustomed to expectations and how activities work. They get to practice, they get to visit with their friends while they work and I don’t have to worry about collecting unfinished work or correcting papers. While they are practicing with their activities, I can herd late children through the door, gather notes and lunch money and take attendance. (If you’re eyeing my numbers and want to get a set of your own, just click HERE and they are available in that post.) I let them choose where to sit–unless it’s an activity that needs to be at a table because it will destroy the carpet. ![]() They simply pull the drawer completely out, carry the drawer to a location of their choosing in the room and start the activity. So when students arrive in the morning, they look to see which number is next to their’s and their partner’s name. Ideally, I would have these lower, but I just didn’t have space. Those numbers also correspond to the pocket chart I have hanging on my cupboard above the drawers. You can choose more or less drawers, it’s really whatever works for you. I knew that if I had around 24 students, I could assign 2 to a drawer and there would be plenty of activities for everyone. So whatever I was going to use to house my activities, it needed to take up minimal space. When I was planning on the set up for these morning work bins a couple of years ago, I knew that I would have one very LARGE mountain that I needed to conquer–SPACE. They lay the foundation for writing and many of the tools they use I will integrate later into more academic activities to keep them building and working those fingers. It’s because of this, that my morning work is strictly geared toward fine motor activities the first few weeks of the year. And for the ones coming in a bit more prepared, they have been on summer vacation hiatus and need to re-ignite those fine motor muscles as well. ![]() So starting at the beginning for these little ones is a MUST. They have very little previous experience with a classroom setting let alone writing their name or letters or numbers. (That’s a debate for another time, and nothing I have control over.) While we have an amazing pre-k readiness program, what we have seen is an influx of children who have never been to preschool and have very little exposure to basic kindergarten skills. Last year my district made the decision to discontinue our Junior Kindergarten program. It doesn’t happen overnight, so we have to take advantage of every opportunity to strengthen those little fine motor muscles–morning work is perfect for that! (If you’re interested in checking out how activities are built upon month after month, check out my monthly posts on Fine Motor Morning Work Stations, just click HERE.) But we have to start them somewhere, we have to get them from HERE today–the today where they can’t hold a pencil or write their name or cut on a straight line–to the tomorrow when they are reading and writing and adding and subtracting. You know, what I need them to work on now is very different from what they will be doing later in the year. By setting the stage and giving them lots of time to explore with tools, you will find that these stations become super independent as you expand skills and difficulty. These first stations are meant to get your students comfortable with materials and activities that will build as the year progresses. Morning Work Stations/Tubs at the beginning of the year will look very different than what they will look like later in the year. Today, they are on time, ready to get to work and anxious about what they will find in their drawer. Students used to come in, dragging their feet and wasting time. Morning Work Stations are THE BEST thing to happen to my mornings. I needed something that would provide hands-on practice but give them a chance to work cooperatively. Blah! I mean, like anything, if it works for you, GREAT! But it has never really been an effective or engaging activity for my students. I’ve told you before how much I dislike paper/pencil morning work. ![]() ![]() Your ELO score is then translated into a rank you can see and then used to calculate which split you should be racing in.Ĭan anyone race in a special event? – Different special events may have different entry requirements based on on your safety rating.Ĭan I race with my own custom livery? – No not currently, you can only race online with official rFactor 2 content.
